Our Conductor
This season we are joined by Roger Hey to direct our 30th anniversary concert, to be held at the Albany Entertainment Centre on Saturday May 24, 2025. (Details will be advertised very soon)
Roger was in Year 4 when he began learning the Cornet at Morawa DHS. Since that time, he has had a continuous involvement with music as a student, performer, conductor and educator.
Roger retired from teaching at the end of 2022 following a highly successful 46 year career with the WA Education Department, including 23 years as Director of Music at Perth Modern School, and one year teaching overseas in Canada. Roger’s career was dominated by providing authentic musical experiences for his students including organising and leading numerous performance tours to the Eastern States, Europe and China. European tours included his students performing at ANZAC Day ceremonies in Villers Bretonneux, Westminster Abbey and at the Menin Gate in Ypres as well as performances in Paris, Italy, Hungary and Austria.
In 2019 Roger moved to Albany to conclude his teaching career following an earlier period in Albany in the 1990’s. During this time, he taught in a number of roles including Brass and Percussion teaching as well as a classroom teacher and acting in a leadership role.
In addition to his work as a teacher, Roger has extensive experience as both a player and conductor working with a number of community music organisations in Perth, Canada and Albany. Since arriving in Albany in 2019 he has performed as a soloist and member of the Albany City Band as well as playing Trombone with the Rainbow Coast Big Band and the Albany Sinfonia.
In 2020 he was a member of the band for the ALOTCO production of Urinetown and in 2022 was joint Musical Director with James Turner for ALOTCO’s Mamma Mia. For this work James and Roger were awarded the 2023 Robert Finley Award for best Musical Direction in a WA amateur musical
Roger was the Wind and Ensemble adjudicator for the 2024 Albany Eisteddfod. He is very much looking forward to directing the Albany Sinfonia for their 30th Anniversary Concert in May.
